Survival in Tough Times: We can find most anything we want right now, and that’s a good thing. A little prudent shopping or gardening might be something to consider. It’s just a thought

A Gardening Forecast

This week’s message is short but urgent.

It was a different kind of winter here and in much of the country. The excuse given in the fall was that it was an El Nino year, and to expect weather milder than average. We had a terrific cold snap (was it January?) of about ten days, then temps were pretty normal through March before it turned rather cold, then warmed up, then turned cold again. Going by the temps, it felt like Late February and early March for about two months. All of a sudden Monday is April 8th.

The Covid lockdowns brought this article's information to the forefront for many of us. You can't eat T.P., but along with that, there are hundreds of items we use weekly that we wouldn't want to be without. Food, of course. Some can be stored, some have to be used by the expiration/pull date. But the more important thing now is pharmaceuticals. Because 95% of them are manufactured, bottled, or produced in china, we are at serious risk of them not being available. Already, I know of several friends who are having difficulty getting very critical meds; for pain, for diabetes, for cancer treatment, for allergy prevention, lung issues and even OTC drugs are necessary to some. Check the 'made in' information for most of the above and you will find it is china. What better way to quickly reduce a population (an enemy population) then withdraw food and necessary medicines. Stock up people. Find a source for fresh water. I happen to have a hand pump attached to my water system. Don't wait! And, keep your pencils...that grid is not going to last...and you will no longer have access to your daily technology. Cash on hand wouldn't be a bad idea either, and for heaven's sake, get important info OFF your phone, you might need it. The article is true, but not forceful enough.

The first rule of gardening is START!

It does not matter where, when or how. An empty tin can on your doorstop can be a place to start. You don't a ton of tools, a huge yard, or a greenhouse. Any plant is a start.

Expect to fail - you will gain experience and confidence when you succeed. Learn from your failures and rejoice in your success - no matter how small your yield.

My grandmother, in her eighties, kept the entire back yard of her yard in vegetables and the entire front yard was in flowers. She thought that grass was a total waste of space. She also did her own canning.
